Diada de Sant Jordi
Every 23rd of April we celebrate in Calella, one of the most beloved festivals of Catalonia: 'la diada de Sant Jordi'.
A festival that combines literary tradition and the celebration of love, and which has its roots in the legend of Sant Jordi from the 13th century in the Catalan city of Montblanc. According to legend, the knight Sant Jordi saved the princess Cleodolinda from the attack of a dragon and as a symbol of love he gave her red roses that sprouted from the beast's wound. The legend has evolved over the centuries, but the tradition of giving roses and books to your loved ones has remained.
During this day, the historic centre of Calella, the Church Square and the Town Hall Square, is filled with cultural activities and stalls selling books and roses, with local authors waiting to sign their book. It is the perfect time to exchange culture and to celebrate love.
Calella is waiting for you for Sant Jordi!
