The Italian cyclist Davide Cimolai (FCJ) won the first stage of La Volta that brought the images from Calella to 163 countries.
This midday, around 12.30 h, the Mayor of Calella, Montserrat Candini, and the director of La Volta, Ruben Peris, cut the opening ribbon of the 97th Volta at Catalonia, with start and finish line of the first stage in Calella and with the participation of the best cyclist in the world.
In total, 55 cycling teams and 199 athletes participate in this edition of La Volta, which for the sixth year, has a first stage of 175.8 km in Calella. The Italian cyclist David Cimolai (FDC) arrived to the finish line located on the N-II road, after 4 hours, 28 minutes and 21 seconds. The winner of this first stage was decided during a massive sprint.
After six years, this 2017 Calella will renovate the contract with La Volta to continue hosting the first stage until 2019. La Volta is an international sport event which represents a huge media impact for the city; Eurosport, Sky News, national and local radio stations, TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio are some of the media that cover the event.
